UGMS 8th Grade Volleyball wrap-up

The UGMS 8th grade volleyball team was defeated by the Smith Leopards in 3 sets during the first round of the KISD B team Volleyball tournament on Thursday.   UGMS took the first set 25-16 but Smith rallied back to claim the next 2 sets 22-25 and 12-15. The ladies had spikes from Kanaiya Blackmon, Keiley Tierce, Shakira Shackleford, and Keni Moore.  Top server of the match was Keni Moore with 14 points.  MIcayla Reeves had 7 points.  Others scoring for the team were:  Savannah Seldon 4 points; Emma Salazar, Savannah Stites and Jocelynn Deaton each had 3 points; Cassandra Vazquez had 2 points; Shakira Shackleford had 1 point.

The ladies next opponent was the Rancier K-roos who the Grizzlies defeated in two sets 25 to 8 and 25 to 12. Spikes were made by Zoe Lynn and Kanaiya Blackmon.   Shakira Shackleford played tough at the net.   The hustle award went to Clarissa Gutierrez.  The ladies controlled the match with their awesome serves and determination to bring home the win.  Scoring for the Grizzlies were Keni Moore with 12 points.  Emma Salazar added 7 points while Jocelynn Deaton contributed 6.  Others scoring were: Shakira Shackleford 3 points; Kanaiya Blackmon, Lauren Grover and Savannah Seldon had 2 points each; Cassandra Vazquez had 1 point.   Other members of the team contributing to the win were Celeste Fuentes and Anna Caldwell.

UNION GROVE VS. CHARLES PATTERSON

The 8th grade grizzly volleyball teams hosted the Patterson Cavaliers in the Grizzly Den in volleyball action on Monday, October 23, 2017.

The Grizzly 8th grade B team came out fired up and ready to play but lost to Patterson in 2 close sets, 20-25 and 24-26, resulting in a 1 and 1 conference record.

Kanaiya Blackmon was the leading scorer with 9 points while Keni Moore scored 8.  Savannah Seldon and Jocelynn Deaton had 3 points each and Savannah Stites had 1.

Clarissa Gutierrez was honored with the hustle award while Keiley Tierce, Celeste Fuentes and Anna Caldwell were recognized for crucial passes made during the match.

The 8th grade Grizzly A team played with desire and hustle resulting in great volleys during the match.   Service and serve receive errors opened the door for Patterson to claim the match in 2 sets, 12-25 and 17-25. Although the team did not come out on top, Coach Dulaney wants to praise the team for their improved attacks and base defensive coverage during the match.

Scoring for the Grizzlies were Mary Allen 5 points, Karly Hansen 3 points, Temiya Johnson had 2 points and Rozalyn Simmons had 1 point.

Offensively, Mary Allen, Temiya Johnson and Evan Fuller had key hits and tips during the match that caught the Cavaliers off guard.

The ladies are 0 and 2 in conference play.

Coach Dulaney and the teams want to thank everyone for attending their matches.

The ladies will celebrate parent night next week when they host the Rancier K-Roos.

Both 8th grade A and B team came out with victories Monday against the Palo Alto lady patriots.

EHMS B team won the matches 2-0 with a score of 25-10 and 25-9.  The lady panthers was led with a devastating charge by Alexis Westlund gaining a huge lead with 13 points. Paris Beckham also contributed with 7 points and defensive standout was Calvionne Baker who dominated at the net.

EHMS A team won the matches with 2-0 and a score of 25-14 and 25-11. The lady panthers was led by the dominating serves by Adelia Puni and Briana Fejeran with a combine 16 points. Great defensive contributions was made by Doxa Manulo, Malia Charfauros, Luse Meleisea and Kayla Williams.

The 8th grade lady panthers are now coming upon the last 2 conference games of the season with a game on MONDAY…….AWAY at Smith Middle School heading into the district tournament.
