The Week After Christmas

Coffee Talk

‘Tis the week after Christmas

And all through the stores

This shopper is buzzing

With coupons galore

All the sales racks are stocked

With treats, red and green,

Bright tissue and gift bags,

And clearance stockings

The boxed sets of perfume

For half off or more

Santa and Frosty

Are bargains, for sure

Delicate ornaments

Seventy percent off

And those pre-lit trees

And Yankee Candle stuff

Am I a smart shopper,

Or am I just greedy?

Has the Christmas spirit

Really made me so needy?

Funny how Christmas,

Celebration of Christ,

Born in a stable

On a dark, chilly night

With farm animal nannies

And shepherds for guests,

They brought only their love

And God did the rest

As I plunk down my coupons

And swipe my bank card

Something stirs in my stomach

A lesson that’s hard

In all this remembering

The folks on my list

Have I forgotten

The reason it exists?

Soon I’ll wrap up the wreaths

And roll up the holly

Pack up the bargains

For next year so jolly

I shove all the holiday

Mess in a box

And remember God’s love

From cradle to cross

As I unlock the attic

Put away all the gear,

I pray peace for all,

And a Happy New Year.

“For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” Isaiah 9:6.
