Nestled in the J&R Plaza shopping center next to Painting With A Twist, sits an authentic German bakery called Pfeifer’s German Bakery and Deli.

Pfeifer’s German Bakery and Deli sells authentic German fresh baked goods, groceries, and meats.

“Everything is basically imported from Germany from chocolate, chips, pickled cucumbers, coffee, and stuff like that. The only thing not imported is our deli meats, which we get from a German butcher in Chicago,” said Patrick Pfeifer, Owner and Master Baker, Pfeifer’s German Bakery and Deli.

Pfeifer, a fourth generation German, grew up working in a bakery in Germany.

“I grew up in a bakery and I got my Masters degree in Germany back in 1997. I moved to the United States in 1999,” said Pfeifer.

After moving to the United States Pfeifer worked at a bakery and knew he wanted to start his own one-day.

“The guy I use to work for always told me he would sell me the bakery after two years and one day I just asked him and that’s how basically I started,” said Pfeifer.

However, he ended up not buying that bakery and instead opened his own in 2002.

“I didn’t buy the bakery, eventually I started on my own because he kept telling me in two years he would sell it and one day he said yes, but I found better and cheaper equipment than what he wanted for the store,” said Pfeifer.

The bakery is about as authentic as you can get, which is great news for the German population in our area. The only way to make it more authentic would be to move it to Germany.

“Most of my employee’s are either from Germany or speak German. I have one pastry chef that doesn’t,” said Pfeifer.

Pfeifer’s German Bakery and Deli is located in the J&R Plaza at 716 Indian Trail, Suite 240 in Harker Heights. The bakery is open Tuesday through Saturday. Visit them in person or online at http://pfeifersbakery.com.
