Superheroes will invade Boulders Sport Climbing Center beginning next week for the fifth year in a row.
Jeff Achee, Recreation Superintendent of of Athletics and Aquatics at Harker Height Parks & Recreation said, “The Superhero Program is for kids with special needs in area. It is an opportunity for them to play sports. Kids that would be able to play the league settings that we have.”
Superheroes will rock climb on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the month of January.
“Tuesday class is for beginners, kids that have not done it before.” Ache said, “Thursday class, we call our intermediate class. It is for kids that have participated before. They have already gone through the motions, they know how to put stuff on and they can get halfway up the wall.”
A new addition that Boulders is bringing to the table is an employee who studied Adaptive Sports, in college.
“She is bringing an expertise to the Rock Climbing program,” said Achee. “It’s going to be great for the kids. She knows how to work with the kids.”
Rock Climbing is an introductory program to the other programs that Harker Heights Parks & Recreation offers for Superheroes.
“The Boulders program is a good individual sport. A good sport for families, that are a little worried about putting their kids in sports because there is going to be a lot of concentration on their child,” Achee said.
He said that once they get into the program and realize that their kid can do a little bit more than they thought that they could, it kinda pushes them into playing basketball or soccer or whatever else we do.
There are currently still openings for the program.
