Super Bowl LI

Football fans across the country are counting down the days until February 5, 2017 when two teams will take the field at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas for Super Bowl LI. At the beginning of the season, the football prognosticators were already tossing around names like Steelers, Broncos, Patriots, and Seahawks as leading contenders for the title of Super Bowl champs – with many favoring the Steelers. Few, if any, had the Cowboys in their sights. Then along came Dak and Ezekiel. Could the two rookies lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl championship, which has eluded them since their last title in 1996?
It’s season 57 for the Cowboys in the NFL, and Tom Landry, the classy guy with the hat, became their first head coach. Tom’s tenure with the Cowboys was from 1960-1988, and during that time he took the team to Super Bowl VI and XII. Then it was Jimmy Johnson from 1989-1993, winning Super Bowl XXVII and XXVIII; Barry Switzer took over as head coach from 1994-1997 and pretty much rode Johnson’s coat tails to Super Bowl XXX.
The Cowboys had a repeat with back-to-back Super Bowl wins under Johnson, and many loyal fans still believe it would have been a “threepeat” if he hadn’t been replaced with Switzer. Switzer kept his job for three years, and then came a long line of coaches who couldn’t quite get the job done: Chan Galley, Dave Campo, Bill Parcels, and Wade Philips. This year it’s up to Jason Garrett, who took over the team in 2010, to get his Cowboys to the Super Bowl, and with the talent he has now – it may just happen.
I asked a few neighbors who they thought would win Super Bowl LI, and this is what they had to say: RICHARD BEAN, FREDDIE LETTMAN, FRANK HOLBROOK, HUBERT DIRRS, and REX CARLISLE all agreed – the Cowboys. And, of course, they are all loyal Cowboys fans. But there’s one in every crowd – ROBERT (Buzz) LYONS, he’s a Steelers’ fan, and he said it will be Steelers vs. Cowboys in LI with the Steelers taking home the Lombardi trophy. Hope his crystal ball is tilted.
Advance notice: February 4, 2018 is the date set for Super Bowl LII, which will take place at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It’s not too late to get tickets.
December went by so quickly that a few wedding anniversaries slipped past with no congratulations: On December 14, JAMES and AMY MILLSAP celebrated their 37th anniversary; December 16, HECTOR and MINNIE LONG were married 60 years; ANDREW and BEA THOMPSON definitely earned bragging rights as they celebrated 64 years of wedded married bliss on December 25; and RAY and ANN AMBROZAK were married 58 years on December 27th. Belated congratulations to all!
Television journalist Bob Schieffer remarked about the Super Bowl – “The truth is the Super Bowl long ago became more than just a football game. It’s part of our culture like turkey at Thanksgiving and lights at Christmas and like those holidays beyond their meaning, a factor in our economy.”
