Summer Fun Continues at the Cultural Activities Center

The Cultural Activities Center is taking registrations for July & August summer camps and activities. During these months kids can participate in  musical performance camps, art for preschoolers, clay for all ages, creative writing, beginner sewing, LEGO camps, and the Missoula Children’s Theater.

Musical performance camp, Camp AAMP’D (Academy of Arts, Music, Performance and Dance), returns this summer led by professional songwriter Jamelle Zamar. Learn the ins and outs of the music industry and enjoy breakout sessions for piano, voice, hip hop, graphic design and songwriting. Campers will hear from professional actors and performers. The camp will be held noon-4:30 p.m. July 10-14. A final performance will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 14. Cost is $65 for the week for ages 8-18 and includes lunch and a snack.

Children interested in engineering, building, or Star Wars, can let their imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGOs at Play-well LEGO camps. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level and use special pieces to create their own unique design. Campers will build X-wings, R-2 Units and Pod Racers in Jedi Engineering using LEGO with a morning session for ages 5-7 year olds and afternoon session for 8-12 year olds July 31-Aug. 4. The morning sessions will meet from 9 a.m. to noon and the afternoon sessions will be held 1-4 p.m. Camps are $169 per week and registration is made through Play-Well at www.play-well.org

Although kids and adults are taking a break from traditional school routines, “Write” Back in Gear with Cynthia Linzy is a fun way to refresh writing skills before going back to school. Students will learn how to choose the right words to turn the pictures inside their heads into art, stories, poems, and plays. The children class is for ages 8-12 and held from 3-4:15 p.m. on July 31-Aug. 4 and Aug 7-12. Classes cost $45 per week.  Adult Creative Writing Class will be held 10-11:30 a.m. and 7-8:30 p.m. ongoing on Tuesdays. This class is open to people age 16 and older and costs $35 per month.

Kid’s Beginner Sewing with Betty Reichert is another option to let your children gain experience learning a useful life skill. This class will cover the basics of sewing by hand from an experienced seamstress who has a degree in elementary education.  Classes for children ages 8-15 will be held 1-2:30 p.m. on July 17-21. The cost is $60 for the week.

Furthermore, more art for all ages will be offered in July for Pre-K, middle school, and high school students with Betsi Chamlee. Pre-K students will explore paints, pencils, pastels and occasionally play singing games. Pre-K art is for children ages 3-6 and meets 9:30-10:45 a.m. or in a second session from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on June 10-14. Cost for Pre-K art is $90. Middle and high school art, open to students age 10 to 18, will be held 1-3 p.m. on July 10-14 and costs $110 per week.

Clay Classes will be returning this summer, and students of all ages can express their creativity while learning clay techniques. Kid’s summer clay for ages 6-10 will be held 9-10:30 a.m. or from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, July 3-Aug. 7. Classes for students age 10-13 will be held 1:30-3 p.m. on Mondays, July 3-Aug. 7. Clay classes for children costs $82.

Clay classes for adults are held 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, June 27-Aug. 1, and from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30am on Saturdays, July 8-Aug. 7. The course for adults is $110 and includes clay, glaze, and firing of pottery works of art.

During August, there are still options for summer activities. The popular Missoula Children’s Theater is back again with an open audition for “The Tortoise versus the Hare, the Greatest Race” at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, for children in grades 1st-12th. If cast, tuition is $65 for the week of August 7-11, and each cast member will receive their own schedule of rehearsals from 10am to noon and 12:30-2:30 p.m. The final performances will be 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12.

Tap Dance Camp for Adults will return with instructor Joanna Zercher Langthorn.  Students will enjoy a week-long camp designed for beginner tap dance students. Mrs. Langthorn has experience on Broadway and will teach students Broadway-style tap dancing. Tap dance shoes not required, but smooth sole shoes are necessary. Classes will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 7-11 for people ages 18 and older. Cost for the week is $75. For information on the class, call the instructor at 254-778-1816.
