Seton introduces MDsave

By Lindsay Starr Platt

Wednesday afternoon at Seton Medical Center Harker Heights a small press conference was held to introduce MDsave the world’s “First Online Marketplace”. MDsave is an option for affordable healthcare that can help in the case of lack of health insurance or to supplement the out-of-pocket costs of large deductibles.
“We are very excited today to offer a new service. We are here to help our neighbors in the community that is called the “Seton Spirit” MDsave helps patients lower the cost of healthcare,” said Matt Maxfield, Chief Executive Officer, Seton Medical Center Harker Heights.
It is estimated there are 33 million people in the United States that are uninsured and 5 million of those people live in Texas. Another 17.4 million Americans are on high-deductable health plans, often times the average deductible is $6,OOO or more. These out-of-pocket costs, whether paying in cash or using insurance often prevents many Americans from getting the healthcare they need. Often times this leads to patients not getting the preventive care they need and preventing future health problems.
“For example, there was a teacher here locally that decided she could not afford her health insurance plan. She opted out of it and found herself with a torn rotator cuff. She was able to get what she needed from MDsave and got everything she needed for under $6,000,” commented George Fayer, Chief Finacial Officer, Seton Medical Center Harker Heights. “Another patient had a deductible of $5,000 for an MRI and they were able to get it using MDsave for $800. There will be a lot of patients in our community interested in this. There are 1,800 different procedures available on the website.”
The website for MDsave is available 24/7 and is free to access. Search the website enter your location and chose your procedure to search the online marketplace. Choose a provider after reviewing prices and distance from your home. You pay up-front and all costs are bundled together in one bill and you can then schedule your appointment.
“This all in one pricing is bundled when you sign-up for MDsave. There is also the option for financing and to negotiate rates on bills from $2,000 to $30,000,” stated Fayer.
The average customer will save 40% to 60% from procedures or tests. Everything from physical therapy, lab tests to labor and delivery can be paid for up-front with lower costs to the consumer.
“At Seton Medical Center Harker Heights, we are taking an important step toward making healthcare more accessible and affordable,” said Maxfield. “We know that the cost of preventive treatments is often a factor in consumers neglecting to have them. We hope that our strategic alliance will increase access to medical care and, as a result, save lives.”
