According to a Harker Heights press release by Parks and Recreation, registration is now open for the annual family camp-out at Dana’s Peak, located at 3800 Commanche Gap Road. The department wishes to extend an invitation to all families looking to spend a night under the stars on May 13 through May 14 as an opportunity to “spend quality family time together and enjoy a variety of activities including hiking, star gazing, kayaking, s’mores and more.”

Check in for the family camp-out will begin May 13 at 3 p.m. The department wants to point out that there will be limited electricity, but a restroom and shower facility will be located on site. There will also be a family cook-out with hamburgers and hotdogs for dinner, as well as s’mores later in the evening. A pancake breakfast Sunday morning will also be provided, with camper check out being no later than 12 p.m. that day.

Families will be required to bring their own tent and sleeping supplies, and lawn chairs to sit around the camp fire is also encouraged. There is a fee of $10 per person which covers park entry and activities, with children aged five and under attending for free; registration is required for all individuals who plan to attend, however.

The first family camp out took place in May of 2014. It was so successful that the Parks and Rec department held a second one just a few months later in November for those who wanted to camp in cooler weather. This event falls under the city’s  Get Outdoors Recreation Program, which promotes citizens to discover new hobbies and meet new people while utilizing some of the natural resources within the community.

Registration is available online at https://apm.activecommunities.com/HarkerHeightsPR or in person at the Recreation Center, 307 Miller’s Crossing by Friday, April 28 for a guaranteed t-shirt. Late registrations can be taken through May 5.
