The Harker Heights Recreation Center is now holding youth volleyball. Registration began in June and teams have been organized into two divisions that will play games and have practice until July 25. The two divisions consist of the beginner’s level, which holds players 10-years-old and younger, while the second one is the intermediate level, holding players up to age 14. There are about 84 kids enrolled in the intermediate division, and around 60 for the beginners. The teams, which are comprised of boys and girls, meet up on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There will be roughly 100 games for the entirety of this season for youth volleyball.
For Athletic Coordinator Bailey Ross, he says he’s more than happy to give kids an opportunity to get active. “If I can help kids make friends their own age while being active, I’m all for it,” Ross said, “Especially in today’s world, where it’s so much easier for a kid to sit inside on a computer all day,”
The Recreation Center in Harker Heights offers many programs year round for members of the community for all ages. For youth sports, the center holds youth volleyball around the summer months, soccer begins in September and follows into basketball through the month of November, with baseball/softball teams in the early spring. There are even activities for the senior community of Harker Heights, and it’s an important mission for the recreation center to include programs, activities and events that will give older adults the opportunity to stay physically and mentally fit. Events include activities such as woodcarving and line dancing on Tuesdays, watercolor painting on Wednesdays, Pickleball on Thursdays and much more.
There is also an open gymnasium in the recreation center that the city encourages everyone to use. There is no fee for Harker Heights residents, and non-residents pay a small fee to enter and use the facility.
For youth volleyball, games are typically held on Monday nights for the beginner’s division and Friday nights for the intermediate. For more information on what activities are available at the Recreation Center in Harker Heights and how to get involved, call 254 953 5657.
