The recreation center in Harker Heights wants to help keep older adults in the community physically and mentally fit. Planned with purpose, the programs and activities at the rec center are specially customized to keep seniors stimulated and entertained. All of the events offered are open to residents and non-residents, and once registered with the program, seniors are welcome to attend all of the weekly activities. There is no cost to join, though some monthly trips and select classes have a small fee. All classes and events are held at the Activities Center at 400 Indian Trail in Harker Heights, unless otherwise noted.
The activities center works tirelessly to provide fun and new events each month for seniors. Such events include a ‘Ladies Night Out’, which invites women 60 and older to come out and meet new people, and try new foods. According to the official Harker Heights website, “The ladies’ night out is designed for the lady who wants to getaway. We will be meeting the second Tuesday of each month at a new restaurant. Don’t forget to invite your lady friends!” This month’s Ladies Night Out will take place on February 21, at Billy Bob’s Burgers in Killeen at 4:30 p.m. It is asked that those interested in attending sign up at the activities center.
Aside from the new events taking place in February, the activities center also follows a diverse weekly schedule that’s senior friendly. The weekly schedule includes advanced pickleball and Terxercise on Mondays, woodcarving and line dancing on Tuesdays, scrabble and watercolor painting on Wednesday, paper projects and canasta on Thursdays, and ‘granny basketball’ on Fridays. Some of the events listed here take place at the rec center on 307 Miller’s Crossing.
On Thursday, February 9 there will be lunch and a movie, “Singin’ in the Rain” beginning at 11:30 a.m. The following Thursday, February 16 there will be a lunch and seminar to avoid scammers from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Bingo will follow after at 1 p.m. There will also be a Sweetheart Bingo special taking place on February 10.
For a complete list of the weekly schedule and included times, or any other upcoming events visit www.ci.harker-heights.tx.us, or call the activities coordinator Heather Buller at 254 953 5493.
