New Pastor brings VBS back to community

New Pastor brings VBS back to community

By Sara Escobar

For the first time in 10 years, First Baptist Church in Harker Heights is holding a vacation bible school. Approximately 30 children, spanning from the Harker Heights area as well as Killeen and Nolanville, are attending this year.
Pastor Stanley Allen has been a part of the church since January and says he was surprised when he found out the church had gone without a vacation bible school for so long.
“There are three main cornerstones for a First Baptist Church,” Pastor Allen said, “And that’s to hold worship, have vacation bible school, and eat,” he ended with a laugh.
Pastor Allen says he wants to provide an opportunity for children within the community to get in the habit of attending the church. Despite the extensive amount of time that had gone by since the last vacation bible school, Pastor Allen believes this year’s bible school has been a huge success. He was able to re-establish the event as well as organize new plans and create a budget for the church.
This year’s theme for the bible school was “Submerge” and this theme was consistent throughout, seen by “under the sea” décor and the activities the children participated in, which ranged from arts and crafts, singing songs, recreational games, as well as bible and mission study. The leader of Women’s Ministries, Debra Allen, described the meaning of the theme as “allowing God to submerge into your heart and life at an early age, in order to dive even deeper into God’s work.”
Pastor Allen also thanks the Harker Heights community for being so generous in offering their support throughout the planning. He notes businesses such as Chik-fil-a, Dairy Queen, and Texas Skate Land providing coupons redeemable for free meals and passes to the children who attend the bible school. Lunch is also served to the families and children daily.
As first time director of the vacation bible school, Lauren Taylor says she’s just as excited as the children she looks after.
“I love watching the kids sing during worship, it’s just so cute. And they learn so fast!” Taylor says.
And it’s easy to see the kids are enjoying the experience as well.
11-year-old Alexis Yoma said, “I really like the music, cause I love to sing and dance.”
And when 11-year-old Elijah Eichelberger was asked what his favorite part of the school was, he gave a very heartening response: “I really like everything about it. I don’t have just one favorite part—and that’s not really the point of all this anyways. The point is to know Jesus.”
With such a promising turnout, the church plans to hold a vacation bible school for many years to come. The church hopes to begin planning for next year’s school as early as November of this year. Pastor Allen says to expect exciting activities and a new theme for the summer of 2017.
