Cove Leader-Press

Gospel recording artist and songwriter Lawrence Chewning will be returning to Texas for a free concert on Saturday, October 7 at For Whosoever Will Ministries, located at 3310 Florence Rd. in Killeen.

Chewning is the author of the hit gospel songs “The Anchor Holds” and “At the Foot of the Cross”.

His song was first recorded in 1994 by gospel singer Ray Boltz as part of his “Allegiance” project and the song went to hit the #1 spot on the national inspirational charts, where it remained for three weeks. It was featured in WOW 1996 music collection and in 2003, was performed by Donnie Sumner on Bill and Gloria Gaither’s “Red Rocks Homecoming.”

“At the Foot of the Cross,” another hit, peaked on the charts at #3.

Since 1994, Chewning has worked as a social worker for the State of South Carolina, and from 2004 to 2006, Lawrence worked part-time with the agency as a free-lance adoption home evaluation writer, while traveling to sing and speak at churches.

Chewning leads a lineup of gospel artists to include Lynn Moore, Max McConnell, and Scotty Ray McDaniel of Copperas Cove. Flautist Richard Hegens Jr. will perform, along with the Hawaiian Christian Dancers.

Doors open at 5 p.m., with the concert set for 6-9 p.m.
