Movies in the Park

Both the city of Harker Heights and Killeen have a very extensive Parks and Recreation program.
The Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department will be playing movies this summer on the third Friday of each month, now through September. The movies are free and this summer’s theme is a “throwback”; it’s aimed to air films that parents can introduce their children to, as well as enjoy themselves.

“Offering a movie in the park is a way of getting families to our park in a laid-back environment, where they can enjoy a family friendly movie on our inflatable screen. There will be no charge for the movie, and movie goers will have the option of visiting local food truck vendors and stands to purchase concessions.” Said Dorian Evans, Activity Specialist for the City of Harker Heights Parks & Recreation Department.

The city’s second movie of the summer will air on July 21, 2017, at the Carl Levin Amphitheater, 400 Miller’s Crossing, Harker Heights.  The throwback theme continues as Christmas in July is celebrated. Food trucks will open at 8:00pm and the movie will start at dusk.

The Killeen Parks and Recreation Department is also offering their own Movies in Your Park series, though it appears to only be running through July. Movies will be screened every Friday at the Killeen Amphitheater, 2201 E Veterans Memorial Boulevard. The summer movie series is hosted by Pluckers, and works to promote the official Parks and Recreation month in July, that is proclaimed throughout the country. The next movie to be aired in Killeen will be Friday, July 7. The title selected is “The Secret Life of Pets”, a PG rated film. According to the city of Killeen’s official website, all movies will begin approximately at 8:45 p.m. For more information call 254 501 6390 or visit
This year, the National Recreation and Parks Association has created the motto “Get Your Play On” for the month of July. According to the NRPA’s official website, it is believed that for both children and adults, play is a vital part of our mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. During Parks and Rec month, the NRPA wants to challenge people to ‘get their play on’ at their local parks.
“Whether it’s summer camp, an adult sports league, exploring a trail, Zumba class, meeting friends on the playground, playing cards in the park, or discovering nature—parks and play go hand in hand.” The website says.
