Mayborn Science Theater offers Labor Day matinee shows

Special to the HHES

The Mayborn Science Theater, located on the campus of Central Texas College in Killeen, will open on Labor Day, Monday, September 4 with a series of matinee shows. Tickets are $5 per person, per show.

At 10:30 a.m. is “Rusty Rocket’s Last Blast.” Featuring the voice of “Ranger Doug” Green of Riders in the Sky, this newly-adapted full-dome show details the last mission of Rusty Rocket who, after decades of teaching the basics of rocket physics has decided this will be his last blast. With one final mission to command, Rusty takes the rocket rookies on an introductory tour of the solar system focusing on a variety of planetary environments. Along the way, the audience learns Rusty is related to every famous spacecraft which explored the solar system.

At 11:30 a.m. is a double feature including “Losing the Dark” followed by “DARK.” The vanishing treasure of a night sky filled with stars is the topic of “Losing the Dark.” The show defines the problems with light pollution, its effects on life and ways in which people can implement “wise lighting” practices to mitigate light pollution. More than learning about the night sky, the audience becomes part of a mission to save it. “DARK” is a full-dome film that explains and explores the nature of dark matter, the missing 80 percent of the mass of the universe. The search for dark matter is the most pressing astrophysical problem of our time – the solution to which will help us understand why the universe is as it is, where it came from and how it has evolved over billions of years.

The matinees conclude at 12:30 p.m. with the laser light show “Spirit of America.” The patriotic-themed laser show takes you to the heart of America with a variety of inspiring songs like “God Bless America” by Celine Dion, “Standing Outside the Fire” by Garth Brooks and “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood.
