Lady Knights teeter on brink of District 8-6A playoff elimination

The Harker Heights Lady Knights went into Tuesday night’s volleyball game against the Belton Lady Tigers with the looking to inch one step closer to a playoff return.

The action on the floor was electric, as the Lady Tigers and Lady Knights dueled back and forth. At the end of the night, Belton swept Harker Heights in three games. The scores of the match were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-18.

The win moved Belton to 5-5, are sole possession of fourth place, one game behind Killeen Ellison at 6-5 in District 8-6A, and 22-14 overall. Belton will play Shoemaker  (3-7) on Friday and can clinch a playoff spot with a win on Senior Night.

The loss dropped Harker Heights to 3-7 overall, and is tied with the Lady Grey Wolves for fifth place. Both teams are two games out of a playoff berth with two games remaining.

Elicia Jackson’s kill helped Belton get on the board. The Lady Tigers were down 5-3 when Jamie Janczak served eight consecutive points, aided by kills by Jackson, Eli Smith, and Kamryn Madden.

McKayla Flowers had an attack and Ja’Lynn Swiney had a kill to keep Heights close, but the Lady Tigers pulled away in the first game and won by nine points.

Emily Holder, along with Janczak, delivered steady service to start the second game. Kelsey Surovik and Hanna Griffin delivered timely kills to keep things close with the Lady Knights. Belton never trailed in the second game, but Aliyah Lockett had three kills and Jendayah Robertson added another as Heights made a late push. But emphatic kills by Jackson and Smith gave the Lady Tigers the five-point win and gave them a two games to none lead.

Heights grabbed the first point of the third game, but Belton served five straight points to take a four-point lead. A combined block of Robertson and Jalena Elzie sparked a 7-2 run to give Heights an 8-7 lead.

Madden’s attack tied the game and Jackson’s kill gave Belton a lead that they would not relinquish. Robertson and Flowers each had kills, but the Lady Tigers were tenacious on the floor and gave no ground. They pulled out the final game by seven points.

The Belton Lady Tigers hosted the Harker Heights Lady Knights in district action at Belton High School on Tuesday evening.

The junior varsity squad started out with a flourish in the first game, but the Lady Knights fought off match point in the second game and was able to fend off the Lady Tigers in the third game for a match win in three games. The scores were 18-25, 27-25 and 25-23.

On the freshman side, 17-point scoring streak by the Lady Tigers’ Gracie Johnson in the first game set the pace for an two-game sweep of Harker Heights. The scores were 25-10 and 25-14.
