An offensive putback by Harker Heights junior Rhandy Hughes for his only bucket of the game and a missed free throw opportunity by Cove on the other end gave the Harker Heights Knights the one-point advantage needed to escape Copperas Cove with an 57-56 upset Friday at Bulldawg Gymnasium.

Trailing by five points heading into the final quarter, Knights senior Chalanc Bennett, who tied with a game-high 19 points, slashed his way to nine of Harker Heights’ 11 points to flip it from a five-point Cove lead to end the third to a four-point Knights lead just three-plus minutes into the final period.

Cove junior Daveon Thomas then knotted the game on back-to-back buckets on assists from senior Dahmir Pearson and junior Jyhlil Rice, respectively, to knot the game at 53-53. After a bucket by Jonathan Chatman for his 19th-point pushed the Knights back in front, Thomas again knotted at 55 the game with another bucket in the paint for Cove.

Thomas also started strong for Cove, leading the Dawgs’ to a 12-5 lead. The Knights finished on an 8-2 run to cut the Cove lead to one, 14-13, after eight minutes of action. Consecutive buckets by Hicks and an assist by Hicks to Bennett started the run and a drive by Chatman for a score at the buzzer ended it.

The Bulldawgs then began to pull away with a 23-point second quarter that pushed their lead to seven, 37-30, by halftime.

Eight points by Chatman helped the Knights take a 25-20 lead before the Dawgs finished on a 17-5 run.

The Dawgs (17-13, 5-6 in District 8-6A) pushed the lead to 10 to start the third quarter on shots by Thomas, Pearson and senior Jordan Govan before three-pointers by Chatman and junior Dillon Gooding cut the Cove lead to five, 47-42 after three quarters of action.

Thomas had eight rebounds for Cove to go with his team-high 16 points while Pearson added 12 points and seven boards. Cooley added seven points on 7 for 9 free throws while Block and Carter added five points each.
