The Harker Heights High School football team has learned a lot in their first spring practice with coach Jerry Edwards and now the Knights will get to show off what they’ve learned next Wednesday at the Red vs. Black Spring Game at Leo Buckley Stadium.
Although this season will mark Edwards’ second season at the helm of the Knights, this spring was the first time he has been able to spend with his team after being hired in late-July last season.

For the past four weeks, the Knights have pushed themselves to learn the ins and outs of both the offense and defense.
Edwards said his team has made tremendous improvement during spring practice.
“I think we have moved along pretty well,” Edwards said. “From the first week to this week, we’ve made a lot of gains. We’ve seen a lot of things, we’ve seen some areas that we need to improve on, so it will give us a good base line going into summer workouts.”
The Knights were 2-8 last season, but were in the playoff hunt until the final week of the season. Harker Heights will also see the graduations of players like Cody Kipp, Damaria Moon and Marcus Anderson, but soon-to-be seniors Josh Ellis and Troy Smith have taken on the leadership role of the Knights.
“Josh Ellis has done a tremendous job at tailback,” Edwards said. “He’s played mostly defensive line, but he came in and has run the ball well this spring.”
New offensive coordinator Derek Ruthardt said the players are picking up his system so far this spring.
“The kids are working really hard,” Ruthardt said. “They’ve been excited since day one, but they understand it’s a process. There’s a lot of learning and they are doing a good job of processing that and learning from mistakes.”
The Knights will show off their new offensive look at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Edwards said he wants his players to get the “game atmosphere.”
“We just want to have continuity and be getting better,” Edwards said.

Youth Football Camp
Harker Heights football coach Jerry Edwards announced that the Knights Youth Football Camp will take place June 16-19 at the high school.
The camp is for future Knights entering grades first through ninth.
Each camper will receive a football camp t-shirt and will develop fundamental skills necessary for football.
A concession stand will be available and the camp will from 8-11:30 a.m. each day.
Campers should wear a t-shirt, shorts, cleats and sunscreen. The camp is $50 per student.
