Knights JV Freshmen football win openers

By John Lewis Eubanks

Harker Heights football made it a clean sweep of Elgin in the season opener last week, with the JV and freshmen paving the way with Wednesday night wins before the varsity won the following night, 35-14.
Heights (1-0) led 38-6 at halftime at Elgin, allowing a first-quarter touchdown on a long-distance play that coach Stuart West noted included missed tackles. But he said the defense played well as a unit, and end Marcus Harris forced two fumbles.
Running back Jaylen McElrath scored two touchdowns, and receiver Duncan Ard caught at least one, coach West said.
He said the team “got off the bus ready to play, and responded well” playing on the road to open the season. But he stressed to the players that not every game will be this easy. Besides winning the game, West said another plus was that everyone got to play.
The JV Black team hosted McNeil Wednesday, and the JV Red team hosted Troy the same day.
Heights Freshmen Black (1-0) was victorious at Harker Heights Field, coach Christopher Bright reported.
Quarterback Stacy Brown threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Andre Byrd hauled in a 59-yard TD pass from Brown in the first half, and caught another TD pass, a 31-yarder in the fourth quarter. Ronald Gurley added a 38-yard TD grab early in the second half. Darian Stephens had two receptions for 46 and 18 yards.
Not to be outdone by the Knights receivers, coach Bright said Andre Gebhardt rushed for 107 yards, with a 48-yard touchdown run, and Nigel Adams ran for 61 yards, in their freshman debuts.
The Knights played Round Rock McNeil Wednesday in Round Rock.
NOTE: Results of the varsity’s Thursday night game at Round Rock McNeil will be in Saturday’s Friday Knight Lights, while the sub-varsity results will be in next week’s edition of the Evening Star.
