The Killeen Independent School District posted a consumer alert in regards to illicit businesses last week.
“KISD has been recently informed that someone claiming to represent a sport memorabilia company known as Touchdown Sports has solicited two local businesses and indicated they are affiliated with Killeen ISD’s athletic programs,” the alert reads, “Killeen ISD is not affiliated with Touchdown Sports; nor has the district given this organization consent to promote sales of sports memorabilia. We are encouraging local businesses to please contact the Killeen ISD Athletics Department to determine the legitimacy of a company that claims to represent the school district before signing any contractual agreement.”
In conjuncture, President and CEO of the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce, Gina Pence, issued a warning to local schools and businesses as well. According to the release, numerous complaints were received in regards to illicit or illegitimate businesses impersonating the school in an attempt to sell unauthorized merchandise and other supplies.
“According the calls I received, this business was calling other businesses on behalf of the high school in an attempt to sell lots of different things, like t-shirts with the school’s sport logo or stadium cups, when in reality, this business has no affiliation with the high school.” Pence says that all business owners, consumers, and citizens a like need to be more aware of these businesses.
“If you do not have an existing business relationship with a company that is contacting you for advertisement, please take the time to research the company before signing a contract.
Feel free to call the Harker Heights Chamber or the Better Business Bureau if you’re uncertain.” She said.
If a business has been accredited by the BBB, it means the BBB has determined that the business meets accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints. The BBB accredited businesses pay a fee for accreditation review and monitoring for continued compliance and for support of the BBB services to the public.
For more information about businesses in the area, call the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce at 254 699 4999 or the Better Business Bureau in Waco at 254 791 2222.
