In 1967 Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell released song call “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” from their United album. It was an instant hit. Later it was recorded again by Diana Ross from the Supremes. It was her first solo number-one hit on the billboard hot 100 chart and was nominated for a Grammy. Here are the opening lyrics to this classic song:

“Listen baby, ain’t no mountain high,

Ain’t no valley low, ain’t no river wide enough baby.

If you need me call me, no matter where you are,

No matter how far; don’t worry baby

Just call my name; I’ll be there in a hurry

You don’t have to worry,”

You may be thinking what does a kid that was born in 1979 know about Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross? I have been told that I am a young man with an old soul. Just ask my spouse and she will quickly confirm this with a look of annoyance in her eyes since she considers herself a millennial.

I couldn’t help but think about this song when I picked my mom up from the airport for a weeklong visit. This was my mother’s first time on an airplane in her entire life.  But when it comes to seeing her most recent granddaughter, I guess it’s safe to say that there ain’t no mountain high enough. There she was standing in the airport pick up area with her Texas shaped carry-on bag smiling from ear to ear. You would’ve thought that my mom had been a jet setter her entire life.

In the Oliver household when it comes to Journey, change is always on the horizon. This week daylight savings time could not have come at a better time. We have been recently trying to figure out how to lengthen Journey’s nightly sleep. So since mother nature encouraged us to spring forward it has all worked itself out perfectly. Journey is also now sleeping in her crib and is nearly completely unswaddled. It is amazing looking at my daughter rolling around in her crib trying to find her a comfortable spot to fall asleep. I can only imagine what I must look like as an adult. She literally looks like she is possessed. One moment she’s on one side of the crib and an hour later she has turn completely sideways. As my wife and I stare at the baby monitor we can’t help but scratch our heads, smile, and relish in the joy in the journey.
