I can imagine for some parents anticipating the first words their child will ever say is like sitting at the edge of your seat waiting for your name to be read for winning best actor or best actress at the Oscars…”and the winner is”…

For me it has been a far different experience. I spend the majority of my time reading and speaking with Journey. For months now Journey has been babbling with greater diversity, making new sound combinations and intonations. She tries to imitate my speech with phrases like “bah-BAH-bah” or “dah-dah-dah.” I have pretend conversations with her and we taking turns “talking.”

Things took a slight turn Monday morning as I was giving her a breakfast bottle. I began to really focus on mouthing and saying the word “mama” while Journey was enjoying her bottle. She stopped and began to press her lips together and move her jaws in the same way that I was moving mine to say the word “mama”. Then my ears heard the sweetest little voice in world say “mama”.

Just to make sure that I wasn’t just hearing things, I started the process all over again and she continued saying mama. While my wife was getting ready for work I took the opportunity to videotape Journey saying her first words with my iPhone. I sent it to Saran and it goes without saying she lit up like a Christmas tree. The real winner is Journey because she could actually understand and mimic exactly what I was doing. I am truly amazed at God’s creation. I know that it’s going to only be a matter time before the celebration of hearing her first words be replaced with “shh Journey be quiet and go to bed”; but for now hearing her first words are sweet music to our ears.
