It’s the most wonderful time of the year

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

by Jonathan Oliver

Christmas is 3 weeks away and Christmas music has been playing everyday in our house since November 30th. I made a Christmas 2016 playlist on Spotify with almost 60 songs, and Saran and I have watched almost one different Christmas movie every night this week. The tree is up and we have attended our first of several Christmas parties of the season. For my beloved daughter Journey, it’s just another day and another month. Sleep, learn a little, play, eat, nap, explore, then back to bed. In so many ways I envy her. Her life is full of splendor and she has not a care in the world. It’s a wonderful time to be alive. Journey is teaching me to look hard, open my heart, and live each day to its fullest regardless of if it’s the holiday season or not.
I sometime feel like the little boy’s parents from the movie The Polar Express. They could not hear the bell from Santa’s sleigh because they no longer believed in the true spirit of Christmas. The spirit of anything is truly possible in this world, but we have to promote the spirit of happiness and light. I believe that love absolutely heals all wounds and that Jesus was born in a manger and ultimately died on the cross for us sinners. That is something I have to be purposefully aware of every day, and not just during the holiday season.
Journey reminds me of the spirit of my youth before I became jaded by heartache, brokenness, social media, and life itself. The joy and love of Christmas is to be had all year around. I just need to get out of my head and live in my heart. Journey is showing me that life is effortless as a child, but as an adult living and being happy and thankful is a conscious choice I get to make daily.
