The first inhabited place on Earth to experience the arrival of 2009 will be Christmas Island, which is a spot in the Indian Ocean northwest of Perth, Australia. A Captain Mynors on board a British East India Company vessel discovered the island on December 25, 1643. One spindly little fir tree leaned precariously against one of the chains that wound around the Christmas tree lot, and with each gust of wind it bent closer to the ground.
