I’m of the opinion

There’s a saying about opinions that goes something like this: “Opinions are like noses. Everyone has one.” That’s the printable one, anyone.

It’s true. You don’t have to go far to find them popping up, on social media, on the news, at the diner lunch table, at the office water cooler.

One of the best things about being in our country is the fact that nobody can tell us what to write (or not write) in the newspaper. We’re not fined or taxed or threatened by the government, large or small, as to what we print. At least not around here.

I believe one of the most under-used aspects of the free press is the letter to the editor. It exists to give Joe and Jane Q. Public a chance to share their thoughts about this or that, even if I or anyone else on the news staff don’t agree with them.

We have our regulars, who perhaps once a month send us their thoughts on politics and other current issues. But I wish we had more people writing letters and bringing their soapbox to us so we can give them a leg up to reach thousands of readers.

It costs nothing except time to write your letter and nothing to get it in print. The only requirement is we must have your name and contact information, although we never print your physical address or phone number.

Local business owners who are “experts” in their fields can also chime in for a business column. If there is someone who would like to help others via sharing their thoughts in a column, they are welcome, too. Those are topics (no more than 500 words, please) that we print when there is space available.

What are your burning opinions and ideas? Maybe you’re not alone in what you think or have a fresh, creative idea for a solution to a local problem. Maybe there is an unanswered question for which you’d like to have an answer for. There’s one way to find out. Gather your thoughts together, get a friend to read it over to make sure it flows and you’ve gotten your point across, then put it in an email with your full name, address, and phone number. Send it with the subject line Letter to the Editor to:

Business owners with creative ideas, get your thoughts out there, too. You may have something great to share with the community such as job hunting tips, real estate advice, tax preparation tips—the sky is the limit, depending on your business.

I’m of the opinion that we need to use our pens—and keyboards—wisely to help make changes, or get questions answered. Looking forward to hearing from you.
