Hill & Wilkinson completes $4 million Harker Heights Central Fire Station renovation

Special to HHES

Hill & Wilkinson General Contractors announced today it has completed construction on a $4 million, 22,000-square-foot renovation of the Harker Heights Central Fire Station, located on 401 Indian Trail.
“We did a complete renovation of the fire station with the goal of keeping it intact and fully operational,” said Kristy Attaway, head of Hill & Wilkinson’s Central Texas Office. “We used three different build methods in order to make it look like one consistent façade and roofing system, adding a total of 6,300 square feet to the station.”
The Central Fire Station, originally constructed in 1985, has a new front entrance on the south side of the building, additional office and storage space, a new training room that will also be used as the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and an expanded kitchen and dining area. A fitness center was also added for firefighters and all city employees.
The EOC room is a “hardened design” with walls made of 12-inch reinforced CMU and concrete infill to withstand tornado-force winds. In case of a power outage, emergency generators will keep the station operational.
“I have been directly involved in a number of construction projects valued at hundreds of thousands to multi-millions,” shares Paul D. Sims, City of Harker Heights Fire Chief.
“I know it pays to have a team like Hill & Wilkinson that can provide ongoing direction and insight as the process moves along.”
MRB Group of Temple was the design architect for the project.
Hill & Wilkinson is also the general contractor for the Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center located next door to the Central Fire Station. It is currently under construction with an estimated completion in August of this year.
