Yesterday we celebrated freedom. We had parades and spoke about a declaration of matters which we hold as ‘self-evident.’ But the idea of governmental or personal freedom is indeed weak in comparison to this:
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery… For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
Galatians 5.1 & 5.13
Freedom, true freedom is not found in who governs us, or in what laws are passed or not passed, but rather in our identity in Christ. We must be those who know that freedom cannot be conferred by any entity in the created order, but rather only by our Creator who created us to be free.
And from what shall we be free? At the root of the matter is that we need to be set free from sin. We are all sinners (ie we commit sins) because we are at our hearts sinners. We are sin sick. And the cure to such is not our own behaviour or paying for our own sins. We are unable to cure or heal ourselves. We must turn to One who is able, and willing.
That person is Jesus and Jesus alone. Turn to Him today and know a true day of independence.
