Free Gardening Class to be held by Harker Heights Parks and Recreation

Special to the HHES

“This month’s Gardeners Education Series topic is Gardening 101. The free class is open to anyone willing to learn and will be led by the experienced Kathe Kitchens. Kathe has been an organic gardener for 20+ years. The class will be on Monday, April 10, 2017 at the Harker Heights Activities Center, 400 Indian Trail from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm.

Some of the topics that will be covered include soil health, sun exposure, water, fertilizers and amendments, companion planting and spacing.  She will also include seeds vs seedlings, how to grow seedlings, transplant techniques, and square foot gardening for a 4 x 8 space.  Included in her presentation will be a list of vegetables, herbs, and flowers that grow well here in this area.

“Having your own garden has many benefits beyond fresh vegetables. To eat food that you have grown with your own hands is very rewarding.  Growing your own vegetables and herbs organically is even better. Kathe has the knowledge to help you become a successful gardener.” said Dorian Evans, Activities Specialist. “This class will give you a good foundation; so you can garden on your own, and explain the benefits of organic gardening versus traditional gardening. The goal is to bring resourceful people to the community to share information, so that anyone with an interest in gardening can gain the knowledge and skill needed to make it fun and enjoyable. After all, that’s what community gardening is really all about.”  There will be a question and answer session with the instructor at the end of the class. If you are not able to make April’s topic, the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation department offers the Gardeners Education Series which are free classes/programs that are held periodically throughout the year on a variety of gardening based topics.
