Hundreds of Harker Heights High School student-athletes celebrated the accomplishments they made this season in football, volleyball and cross country at the Harker Heights Fall Sports Banquet Wednesday evening in the Harker Heights High School cafeteria. The Harker Heights Knights Court Booster Club organized the event that included a barbecue dinner for students, family members, and coaches. Each sport held its own awards presentation and those in attendance said there was a lot to celebrate.
“Several school records were broken this year,” said Jerry Edwards, head high school football coach. “We broke the all-time rushing record for the season. The last record had stood for about ten years until now.
“It’s the first time football had a winning record in over 11 years and the first time they went to the playoffs in four,” said Whitney Cole, president of the Harker Heights Knights Court Booster Club. “Volleyball had a great run and almost backed into the playoffs. They ended in a three-way tie for fourth place and lost the tie-breaker.”
“The cross country teams always represent themselves really well and set themselves up to not only do well in the fall but also with what they have coming in the spring with some of the sports those athletes play,” Cole added.
During the award presentations, coaches spoke highly of the students they worked with this year.
“All of these sports actually start before school does, so they give up part of their summer to come out and start workouts,” said Shelly Harris, assistant athletic campus coordinator. “They give up a lot of their time and put in a lot of hard work, so this is our time to give back to the kids and honor them for all of the things that they’ve done.”
Students cheered for one another as each received their award or certificate. Some even became emotional as they reflected on the past season.
“I think that this was the best team I ever played with in my life,” said Valicity Saunders, a senior volleyball player. “When I leave, I’m going to cry. I love everybody and I feel like everybody really came together as a team this year and we really worked hard. It’s like family.”
Cole estimated about 450 to 500 people attended Wednesday night’s banquet and said the spring banquet will attract an even larger crowd when coaches will present scholarship awards and recognize spring athletes.
