High school students get an up-close look at phlebotomy – drawing blood from a patient – during last year’s Central Texas College Medical Lab Technology open house. This year’s open house on Friday, October 27 is free and open to the public.

Demonstrations and presentations on histology, medical laboratory science and phlebotomy will be offered during the MLT open house in the CTC Science Center (Bldg. 150). Students in these programs will display various components of each field through poster presentations, verbal explanations and hands-on demonstrations. All three areas are in-demand, high-paying career options. “According to the Texas Work Force, there will be an estimated 29.6 percent increase in MLT jobs between now and 2022,” said Ann Kelly, program director for the CTC MLT program. “These high-paying jobs have an average of $26-35 an hour to start and great job security and fulfillment.”

The next day at the CTC Career and Technical Education Center (Bldg. 118), members of the Industrial Technology program will offer guided tours of its welding, automotive repair, graphics and printing, heating and air conditioning maintenance, building trades and diesel engine maintenance labs. Guests can partake in several hands-on activities and meet with counselors to discuss each program of interest and learn about CTC’s competency-based classes which lead to a Certificate of Completion or an Associate in Applied Science degree.

“The open house is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in learning a new trade or skill or for anyone thinking about going to school to start a career in one of these technical areas,” said Ronnie Turner, chairperson of CTC’s Industrial Technology department. “The vocational skills acquired through these programs can lead to a variety of job opportunities. Each program offers an internship option to provide real-world experience.”

Also during the open house, the Central Texas Rodders and Hooligan’s car show will take place in the parking lot. Registration for the car show starts at 8 a.m. and judging will be held at 11 a.m. Food and music will also be offered during the event.
