Council unanimously votes to keep minor curfew

The Harker Heights City Council met on Tuesday to conduct a public hearing on the need to continue the section of Harker Heights ordinances defining a curfew for minors in the City of Harker Heights and to discuss whether it will be abolished, modified, or continued.

The city council voted unanimously to continue sections 130.20 through 130.25 which states that it is unlawful for any person under the age of 17 years to intentionally or knowingly remain, walk, run, stand, drive, or ride about in or upon any public place in the city during curfew errors.

The ordinance also provides for a violation if a parent or business owner knowingly allows or permits the minor to be out during curfew hours or remain on the property of a business. Under section 130.24, a violation of curfew hours can result in the prosecution of the minor and parent, or the business owner.

There are several exceptions and defenses, which include when the minor is accompanied by a parent, responding to an emergency, engaged in lawful employment activities, as well as several other exemptions.

Curfew hours are 11 p.m. on any Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday until 6 a .m. the following day and 12:01 a.m. until 6 a.m. on any Saturday or Sunday.

Additionally, a contract was also issued to G&K Services to supply and maintain the City’s employee uniforms as well as the costs associated with towel rentals, floor mats, air fresheners, etc.  G&K Services outbid the current provider Zip Cleaners by several thousand dollars.

The council also appointed Patricia Darnell as election judge for the May 7 Joint Municipal Election.

The next council meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 5 p.m.
