CORNUCOPIA: Remember When

CORNUCOPIA: Remember When

by Betty Weiss

Do you find yourself saying, “Remember when,” during your conversations more often than you did years ago? It must have something to do with that unrelenting process called “aging” that involves terms like syntex, frontal lobe, and cerebral cortex. Our memories are stored all over the brain and not in one particular area. That may explain why sometimes it’s so stressful finding the right cubbyhole where a special memory has been stored. Researchers remind us that the brain is not a tape recorder. Now they tell us. But in spite of those occasional memory glitches, it’s still delightful to “remember when.”
Remember when most popular male singers had a first and last name: Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Eddie Fischer, Vic Damone, Elvis Presley, and Brook Benton. (No one sang “A Rainy Night in Georgia” any better than Benton.) Years from now, wonder how many folks will remember Eminem, Akon, Hariharan, Usher, and Jay Z.
Remember when Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, and Teresa Brewer ruled the airways. Now we’ve got a Lady Gaga, and a Madonna.
I remember when the Ink Spots, Eagles, and Beatles seemed wild and crazy for a musical group. Now we’ve got: Diz and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Really!
Remember listening to the big band sounds of Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Gene Kruppa. I burned some of my brain cells trying to remember the Kruppa band. I could only picture a man playing the drums, but the name wouldn’t come. How memorable will 30 Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park be when going down memory lane?
Remember when the Statler Brothers, Gatlin Brothers, and the Oakridge Boys topped the C&W charts. A group called Alabama once seemed odd, but now there’s Lady Antebellum, and Sugar Land. Anyone ready to sign a petition for George Strait to come out of retirement?
I remember when Hollywood censors were in an uproar when Rhett Butler dared to tell Scarlet that he didn’t give a “damn,” and protesters marched outside a movie theater in Jersey City when “The Moon is Blue” (with William Holden) used the word “virgin.”
Last week, while waiting for another show to come on television, my husband and I watched about 30 minutes of “The Heat.” Melissa McCarthy pretty much ran the list of naughty words in that time frame. The Hollywood censors must have been napping.
And last but not least, remember when Bing Crosby crooned the lyrics to “Dearie.”…remember when Chicago was in flames and it was blamed on Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, and how the Palace was packed when Harry Lauder performed his vaudeville act. The great fire of Chicago was in 1871, and Lauder’s prime time was in the late 1800s.
Well, dearie, if you remember that, than you’re much older than I. Whew! I’m glad there’s someone older than I.
A few couples remembering their wedding anniversaries in August are: August 10, will be 48 years for JIM and PHYLIS SISSON; August 18, JAMES and DONNA DELANO will celebrate their 57th. August 15 will be 59 years for BARTON and BARBARA MASHBURN; August 22, BUTCH and DARLA MENKING will mark 35 years. Congratulations to all!
