Every year since 1962 members of Globe Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association have elected one of its members as Woman of the Year based on her participation in the chapter, community involvement, and educational background.  The first woman to receive the prestigious honor was Nita England.  This year’s WOY, LILLIE AGUERO, was elected at the chapter’s February meeting at the Shilo Hotel.

Lillie first joined ABWA in 1980 as a member of the Heart of Texas Chapter where she served as vice-president and secretary, and in 2008 she joined Killeen’s Globe Chapter.  During her membership in Globe she has served as treasurer for several terms, participated in the chapter’s annual fundraisers – Bowlathon, Breakfast with Santa.  She’s chaired or served on various committees, and attended the 2014 National Conference in Little Rock, and has attended several Central Texas Area Leadership Conferences, which are usually held in Killeen. .

Lillie received her business degree from San Angelo College in 1964, and has taken numerous accounting and taxation classes with CTC and ATU.  She was employed for almost 25 years with a local CPA firm, and in 2000 she opened her own tax and accounting business, Lillie Aguero & Associates. She passed the test to become an IRS Enrolled Agent and in 1990 she received the Accredited Tax Advisor designation, which mandates 40 hours of continued education each year.  She’s also presented New Business classes through the Texas Workforce Commission.

Lillie served on the YMCA board for 14 years, held all offices in the Killeen Lioness Club, volunteers with Families in Crisis, was initiated into the Center Texas Area Women’s Hall of Fame, Finance Officer for Kempner United Methodist Church, and member of CTEA Professional Organization – and there’s more. She’s a very worthy recipient for WOY.

The chairperson for the evening’s festivities was LITA DANIEL, and she and her committee presented a program, “Queen of the World,” which included a slide show of bygone days in the life of the chapter. There was also a memorial presentation to honor the deceased WOY.

Some of the previous WOY present for the event were:  CHRIS LAVIOLETTE, CANDACE LOPEZ-SCHIMKAT, AMY MILLSAP, KERRY PEREZ, LINDA HUTTO, BARBARA MASHBURN, BARBARA MENKING, JANE BARR, MARIA GARCIA, KAROLA ANTHONY, and WANONA STALLINGS.  .

Belated congratulations to RAYMOND and KERRY PEREZ on their 37th anniversary that they celebrated on February 24.

It’s almost here!  The SEMI-ANNUAL BOOK SALE sponsored by Friends of the Harker Heights Stewart C. Meyers Library is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, from 8am-2pm.  It’s spring-cleaning time and time to restock your personal library.  There are books, books, and more books for all ages from arts & crafts to chilling mysteries.  The books have been sorted as much as possible, and prices range from ten cents to one dollar.  The library is the place to be on Saturday, April 30th.

You may have noticed a new picture with this column.  When I went to Heights Photography for my picture, I asked the owner, Russell Cobb, if there would be a charge if the camera broke.  Didn’t happen.  So, HEIGHTS PHOTOGRAPHY is still the place to go for your special portrait needs.
