City Manager: Renovation at good pace

City Manager: Renovation at good pace

By Sara Escobar

Construction at City Hall is continuing this month at a good pace, according to City Manager David Mitchell. In November of last year, plans were underway for the construction and redesign of City Hall and the Recreation Center—a project that would cost an estimated $2 million in renovations, with a 10-month target of completion. The project was speculated to be completed on September 30, 2016, and though it may be a few weeks late due to some weather conditions that slowed progress, it is said construction is still running smoothly.
The renovations for City Hall include adding an area for the Information and Technology Department for a generator, taking the city manager’s office and creating a future council and office space, as well as creating private court waiting areas. These changes will supply additional space for staff and increase storage in the building in order to improve the quality of City Hall; there will be an additional 4,000 square feet added to the facility. The project is being funded by 2014 Certificates of Obligation.
“The rainy weather did make an impact, but overall, it’s been a smooth job,” said Mitchell. “With any construction project, there are going to be minor issues that can’t be predicted. Our contractors have done a great job at communicating the issue and finding a solution. Now that the weather has been a little better, we’ve definitely been speeding up progress,” Mitchell went on to say that he couldn’t be more pleased with the way the project is going.
Changes to the Recreation Center include adding a larger conference room, a kitchen area, the addition of offices and a secondary exit. The renovation of the Rec Center will add an additional 2,000 square feet to the building, and is being funded by 2008 Certificates of Obligation.
Mitchell projects that the construction will be completed by late September or mid-October.
