Canteen gets Santa Pal 2016 started right

With the help of the Canteen owners, Lynn and Miker Barber, the Harker Heights Fire Department Santa Pal program has a generous start on toys to make sure Harker Heights children have something to open this holiday season.
The Canteen helped collect over 200 toys and $3,000 towards more toys.
“We really appreciate everyone coming out and supporting us,” said Lynn Barber. This is the fifth year the Canteen has helped raise donations for the Santa Pal program.
The Booze Fighters #78 of Killeen helped to sponsor the Canteen this year.
Without the Booze Fighters’ help, this year would not have been as plentiful said Barber.
Santa Pal helps provide toys and a full Christmas meal to underprivileged Harker Heights residences.
The Santa Pal program is sponsored by the Harker Heights Fire Department and the Harker Heights Lions Club solely through donations made by businesses and individuals.
The program will help to serve around 190 families; approximately 500 children this year.
“We get worried or how are we going to make it work, but we have people like the Canteen help out, the Lions Club helps and others… As a group, the community comes together. They help those that need help,” said Harker Heights Deputy Fire Chief, Glenn Gallenstein.
Monetary donations and new unwrapped toys are needed to help ensure smiles on the faces of children and families this winter.
“It’s really important. It shows our community how to reach out and help those who are less fortunate or might be down and hard on their luck,” said Deputy Chief Gallenstein. “At one point, all of us has had those days or years where it’s a little tight. And this makes it where everyone will have a Christmas.”
The Santa Pal program has helped to provide those in need of a cheerful Christmas throughout the community for over 25 years.
Donations can be dropped off at the Harker Heights Central Fire Station or at Harker Heights City Hall.
Applications for Santa Pal can be submitted to the Harker Heights Central Fire Station starting Dec. 3 through Dec. 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m..
To apply for the Santa Pal program, the applicant must be a Harker Heights resident. Proof of residency and income must be provided, along with identification. Other documentation will need to be provided for the individuals listed on the application.
