Businesses celebrate military children

Sunday, several businesses came together to hold a free event for military children as a way to show their thanks and support to military children in the area.

“This is a celebration for Month of the Military Child. We wanted to do something in this community to celebrate military families and have an opportunity to let families know access our resources that are free,” said Angela McDonald, director of communications, Comfort Crew For Military Kids.

The event was sponsored and hosted by Comfort Crew for Military Kids out of Austin.

“Comfort Crew is a 501c3, so we are a non-profit and our focus is really on children,” said McDonald.

In addition, there were several family fun activities that families and children of all ages could enjoy for free.

“We have face painting, hula hoops, relays, bubbles; just kind of your typical kid’s activities. We also have a snow cone truck here,” said McDonald.

Additionally, the first 150 military families to arrive received free goodie bags and subway sandwiches.

“Subway has donated sandwiches to the first 150 military families that come and we have goodie bags,” said McDonald.

Also at the event were static displays from the Harker Heights Police Department and Harker Heights Fire Department.

“The police department will be here making ID’s for children,” said McDonald.

The event lasted until 3 p.m. and drew a large crowd.

“It was a lot of fun. I spun the wheel for a prize. The prize was candy that I couldn’t eat so they let me spin it again and I got a golf towel to put on my golf bag,” said Harker Heights Resident and military child Clayton Ware, age 13.
