“Do you know where you’re going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you?” Those are some lines from one of my favorite artists, Diana Ross. The great news is that no matter where you may find yourself in this moment, you have the ability to make choices that are certain to transform your life over the course of the next few months. The only issue is whether you are finally ready to stop talking and wishing and abdicating responsibility, and prepared to launch a hostile takeover to become the CEO of your life.

Yes, becoming the Chief Executive Officer of your own life will require courage and discipline. Over the years many of us have become slaves to jobs, supervisors, spouses, significant others, friends, children, depression and even laziness. We claim we want better for our lives, but we have yielded control to others. This is the time to reclaim your rightful position and embrace the responsibility of being CEO of YOU.

As CEO of your Life, you should be fulfilling the following roles:

Leader
– Create, advocate, and promote your life’s purpose and vision. Do you have a vision statement for your life? Do you know your life’s purpose?
– Support and advance the motivation of all employees. You are both CEO and employee of your life, how are you supporting, advancing and motivating yourself to further success? How are you motivating the ‘volunteers’ in your organization such as your close family and friends? Are you building an environment that nurtures excellence?

Visionary
– Ensure staff and stakeholders have up-to-date and accurate information on why decisions are made. Do you know the precise state of your life? What information do you need to make wise decisions related to your health, spiritual maturity, financial freedom, growth, relationships, etc.?
– Constantly look ahead for future opportunities while maximizing current assets.
– Bridge the gap between the organization and the community.
– Create contingency plans and exit strategies

Decision Maker
– Formulate policies and plans. Do you have written short and long term plans for your life? While it is true you cannot predict the future, it is also foolhardy to live with no plans or intentions beyond the present. Even ants plan ahead.
– Decide/guide company operations. Who makes the decisions for your life? Do you currently accept 100% of the responsibility for your life or are you still blaming parents, family, friends or others?

Manager
– Oversee company operations
– Implement plans
– Manage human resources
– Manages financial and physical resources

Board Developer
– Assist in the selection and evaluation of board members. Who have you identified as advisers and mentors in your life? How often are you in contact with them? Do you give them sufficient and accurate information to effectively advise you?
– Support Board’s evaluation of CEO. Feedback is essential to your growth. Do you permit trusted advisers to give you honest feedback on your performance, growth and weaknesses?

Chief Public Relations/Marketing Officer
– Ensure that the company, its mission, purpose, products and services are consistently presented in strong and positive manner to all relevant parties. Developing a broad base of relationships and support. What’s your brand, or in other words, what’s your reputation? Are you known as a hothead, a problem solver, a gossip, a person of integrity, a sloth, a hard worker? People are always watching whether it is in person or digitally. Be careful and consistent with the image you project. It has long term implications for your success.

Becoming CEO of your own life is not easy and is certainly not for everyone. Some people simply prefer to live their whole lives completely at the mercy of other people and circumstances. However, if you are serious about maximizing the talents and gifts God has given you, then, the journey to becoming your own CEO is one that you must fully commit to right now.

No matter how daunting the task may seem to you, or how steep of a learning curve you think you have, be encouraged that success leaves clues. You can create a roadmap for your success based on lessons gleaned from the successes and failures of those who have gone before you. Stop procrastinating and second-guessing yourself. Your life is totally worth the effort!
