Astrology parties announced for August

Harker Heights Evening Star

The Central Texas Astronomical Society will host free public star parties on Saturday, August 6th, from 8:30pm to 11:30pm at Overlook Park near Belton and the Hubbard City Lakes Park in Hubbard. CTAS members will provide telescopes to view the visible planets and a selection of stars, star clusters, nebulas, and galaxies.
We have a very nice alignment of planets to begin our Star Party this month. A Crescent Moon, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus will be in perfect alignment in the west right after sunset. You can capture this rare event with the camera on your smartphone. The Moon will be highest in the sky, with Venus much lower and to the right, just above the horizon. Mars, Saturn, and Neptune will also make an appearance this month.
The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is 2.5 million light years away. On a clear dark night, M31 is the most distant object visible with the naked eye. The Ring Nebula (M57) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Lyra and looks like a smoke ring. M57 was formed when a shell of ionized gas was expelled by a red giant star, on its way to becoming a white dwarf.
We will look at these and many other celestial objects this month. Please check our web site,, for more information and directions to the site closest to you. In the event of cloudy weather, a cancellation notice will be posted on the CTAS website homepage by 6:30pm.
