The city of Harker Heights is now accepting applications for multiple boards, commissions and committees. Open positions include: library board, planning and zoning commission, parks and recreation advisory board, zoning board of adjustment and the public safety commission. The commissions application can be located on the city’s website www.ci.harker-heights.tx.us. There are also openings for a firefighter/paramedic as well as a light equipment operator listed.
The application can be turned in to City Hall located at 305 Miller’s Crossing, to the assistant city manager and city secretary, Patty Brunson. Brunson has worked in the city of Harker Heights since 1984, and has held various positions throughout the city. As assistant city manager, she fulfills city secretary functions and overlooks the overall functioning of the administrative department staff, court department personnel, IT department, parks and recreation, the library, the pet adoption center, and the human resource department.
Brunson says they are looking for citizens who are willing to learn about and serve in their city boards and committees. “There are many positions open that can aid in enhancing the quality of life throughout the city,” Brunson said.
The application asks a few questions in regards to an individual’s personal information, along with any experience or skills that would qualify a person for these job opportunities. Applications are held for one year, and there is currently no deadline on when applications must be turned in. Brunson says the city will continue advertising open positions until enough applications are turned in to fulfill all the vacant spots. For most positions listed, you are required to be a resident of Harker Heights in order to be eligible to apply.
Some jobs listed require only a high school diploma or GED, while others call for a degree from college or university that is closely related to that specific field. Most jobs open for applying insist on some experience in the specific job type; such as two years in customer service or the public library field for the library board position, or a minimum of six months’ experience in construction work for the light operating position.
“From a city employee’s perspective, you get to dive into the inner workings of how a city is ran and operated. You can make an impact in so many different ways working through the city—whether it be through parks and recreation, or public safety.” Brunson says.
